DOORS — old, new, pretty, blue, worn, wooden, painted, simple — doors have always captured my attention.
Everywhere I go I find myself taking a picture of a door that tugs at my heart. An old door invites questions: what stories has it witnessed across generations? Which families passed through it, which children learned to run across its threshold, which elders shuffled by, which moody teenagers slammed it in anger, which tiny toes padded in for the first time? Doors hold the small, tender moments of daily life.
Over the years I’ve lived behind eighteen different doors. They span continents — Europe to the United States — and each one is a patch in the quilt of my memory. Every place became a home warmed by a pot of boiling pasta, a place where I left a little piece of myself and carried a treasured fragment forward. Moving from one door to another stitched new memories into my life and taught me how impermanent and precious “home” can be.
Along the way I’ve encountered many doors that closed when I least expected it. I would sometimes stand before a locked door, puzzled and hurt, wondering why it wouldn’t open. I knocked and grieved when paths were blocked. Other times doors opened exactly when I needed them, and I stepped through with relief and gratitude. Those moments taught me patience and the humility of timing.
With more years behind me, I look at doors differently. I approach them more calmly, trusting that each opening and closing has a reason. We cannot force every door to move for us, and some doors protect us by staying shut until the right moment arrives.
Last June I opened a new door — wide and wholehearted — to share my love of stories, food and recipes. That decision led me here, to this community. Your presence has filled that space with warmth and connection, and I cherish the conversations, the shared meals, and the recipes we have exchanged. Looking ahead, I feel excited and hopeful about where these doors will lead next.
There are always doors: old and new, pretty and worn, painted and plain. At their core, they are opportunities — chances to explore a new path, to learn, to change, to grow. What lies beyond any door is rarely certain; life is full of surprises that can be thrilling, frightening, joyful, or all of the above.
So I ask you: which door do you long to open? Which threshold calls to you now, inviting a new chapter, a new recipe, a new friendship, a new home?
