The Most Memorable Macaroon I’ve Ever Tasted

The Salty Tart

Chef Michelle Gayer, a multiple James Beard Award nominee and 2017 semifinalist for “Outstanding Baker,” has been crafting exceptional pastries since opening The Salty Tart in 2008. Gayer and her team prepare everything from scratch daily — from pastry-cream–filled brioche and flaky layered croissants to buttercream-topped cupcakes and classic banana cream pies. Their macarons have earned a devoted following for good reason: delicate, balanced, and memorable. For special occasions, The Salty Tart’s custom cakes are a reliable indulgence; their chocolate mousse cake is a favorite for birthdays and celebrations.

After originally operating a stall in Minneapolis’ Midtown Global Market, Gayer has consolidated operations to the St. Paul location in Lowertown. That move allows the bakery to focus on expanding offerings at the storefront: in addition to an extensive pastry case, the shop now serves breakfast, lunch, and quality coffee — making it a destination for both sweet treats and casual meals.
