Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii

Local Beauty

The northwest corner of the Big Island is known as the Kohala Coast (pronounced Ko-HA-la). This coastline is where Hale Ahonui is being built. The region showcases a wide cross-section of what makes Hawaii special: world-class beaches, luxury resorts and golf courses to the south, and charming small towns like Hāwī (Ha-VEE) and Kapaʻau (Kapa-OW) to the north. These towns preserve a quieter, more traditional island character and lush countryside that often feels untouched.

Nestled between the wind-swept slopes of Kohala Mountain to the east and the vast Pacific Ocean to the west, the property sits on open grassy meadows that call to mind the Kansas Flint Hills—wide, rolling and open. From this vantage, panoramic ocean views and dramatic mountain backdrops create a striking and peaceful setting.

Local Abundance

The Kohala Coast benefits from diverse climates and terrain. Elevation here ranges from about 120 feet at the Akoni Pule highway to more than 5,400 feet at the summit of Kohala mountain. This variety supports different weather, ecosystems and agricultural opportunities, making the area rich in local produce and fresh seafood.

Hawaii has increasingly emphasized locally grown food, and the Big Island plays a major part in that movement. The island produces a significant portion of the state’s beef, thanks to extensive ranchlands such as Parker Ranch nearby. Local markets and harbors supply fresh fish like mahi mahi, ahi and opakapaka straight from the boats at Kawaihae (Ka-WHY-hi). The region is also famous for tropical fruits—rare white pineapple, dragon fruit, guava and passion fruit—and for macadamia nuts and locally raised pork. This abundance makes the Kohala Coast a true food lover’s paradise.

Panoramic Views and Climate

The views from the Kohala Coast are expansive. From many vantage points you can see the Pacific to the west and several major Hawaiian summits—Hualalai, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea—to the south, while Kohala Mountain rises to the northeast. The combination of ocean horizon, ridge lines and shifting light at sunrise and sunset provides unforgettable scenery that changes with the seasons and the weather.

Hale Ahonui — Our Dream Site

Hale Ahonui sits on a three-acre lot at roughly 1,000 feet elevation. This location delivers comfortable year-round temperatures that average about 73°F. Daytime highs often reach the low 80s and evenings typically cool into the mid-60s—an ideal range for outdoor living, pools, lanais and open-plan indoor spaces that capture breezes and views.

My first encounter with the Kohala Coast came while searching for vacation ideas years ago. A single photograph captured my imagination and prompted a visit. On that trip we discovered the lot through a local realtor and decided to buy it on the spot. That impulse purchase has turned into a long-term project: designing and building a home that celebrates place, climate and local resources.

Today, the ocean view from Hale Ahonui is already spectacular. When the house and pool are finished, evenings will invite everyone to grab a fruity drink, kick off their slippahs (flip-flops) and enjoy magnificent Hawaiian sunsets from the lanai. That vision—comfortable, welcoming and connected to the landscape—guides every design decision we make.
