Shower steamers, also called shower melts or shower bombs, are an easy way to add aromatherapy to your daily shower routine. They’re simple to make with just a few ingredients and are perfect when you don’t have time for a bath but still want the benefits of essential oils.
Below you’ll find a straightforward recipe, step-by-step instructions, helpful tips, and a variety of essential oil blend ideas so you can customize steamers for energy, relaxation, uplift, or clear breathing. Choose fun silicone molds to make shapes that delight or to create thoughtful handmade gifts.
Watch a short demonstration to see the right texture for the mixture and how finished steamers look when dry. Around the 3:30–4:00 minute mark you can spot the slightly damp sand consistency that works best. The finished steamers are firm once fully dried.
Essential Oil Shower Steamer Recipe
Basic ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup distilled water
- 25 drops essential oil (choose blends below to customize for energy, calm, uplift, or clear breathing)
To make:
- Place 1 cup baking soda in a glass mixing bowl.
- Add distilled water starting with 1/4 cup; add more if needed until the texture resembles slightly damp sand.
- Mix thoroughly.
- Add essential oils and stir to evenly distribute fragrance.
- Spoon the mixture into silicone molds, pressing firmly with the back of a spoon or your fingertips.
- Allow molds to dry completely overnight.
- When fully dry, gently remove the steamers from the molds.
To use:
- Place a steamer on the shower floor out of the direct spray but where it will get occasional splashes.
- The shower’s heat and intermittent water exposure dissolve the baking soda and release the essential oil aroma into the steam.
Tips:
- Unlike bath bombs, shower steamers don’t require citric acid or other expensive additives—baking soda, water, and essential oils are sufficient.
- In humid climates drying may take longer. Ensure steamers are fully dry before removing from molds to prevent crumbling.
- To speed drying, place molds in a low-temperature oven (around 250–300°F) for a short time, watching carefully to avoid overheating.
- You can make unscented “blank” steamers by omitting essential oils and adding a few drops just before use.
- Store finished steamers in an airtight container to preserve fragrance and prevent moisture absorption.
