It turns out Maxence and I will be spending a few days in New York City this June, and I can hardly contain my excitement. I visited New York once when I was fifteen, and ever since I have wanted to return. The city stayed with me — an impression of energy, variety, and a thousand small discoveries waiting on every block.
Ten years later, my appetite for the city feels even stronger. Over the years I’ve read more books, followed more reviews and blogs, watched films and episodes of Sex and the City, and collected impressions that make me eager to explore more deeply. This trip feels like a chance to see and taste everything I’ve imagined and to find surprises I couldn’t have anticipated.
Plane tickets: secured. Hotel room: booked. Guidebook: purchased. I’ve started compiling lists from food writers and local bloggers, but I’m also turning to you, readers of C&Z, for recommendations. I’m most interested in walking the streets rather than spending long hours in museums, seeking the quirky and authentic spots, and following my curiosity with a particular focus on food and flavor.
If you were in my shoes — eager to wander neighborhoods, curious about hidden gems, and on a mission to taste distinctive and memorable dishes — what would you do? Where would you stroll and what would you eat? Which neighborhoods should I prioritize for wandering, people-watching, and sampling local specialties? Are there stray markets, small cafés, bakeries, or bodegas that you would not want me to miss?
Here are a few things I’m thinking about, based on what I’ve been reading and hearing: spend time walking different neighborhoods to absorb their distinct characters; prioritize smaller, authentic restaurants and street food as much as notable institutions; sample a combination of classic New York fare and international cuisines that reflect the city’s diversity; allow time for serendipity — some of the best discoveries happen off the beaten path. But I’d love your practical tips: specific dishes, dishes to avoid, the right time of day to go to certain places, and any local rituals I should be aware of.
To make the most of limited time, I’m considering building each day around a neighborhood or theme — for instance, one day focused on a particular borough’s food scene, another day devoted to bakery and coffee culture, and a day for markets and street vendors. I’m also curious about great vantage points for views, simple outdoor pleasures like parks or promenades, and neighborhoods that are particularly rewarding for leisurely walking and photography.
Practical suggestions are welcome, too: tips on how to approach popular restaurants that accept walk-ins, the best ways to avoid long lines at iconic spots, and any seasonal treats or local specialties that might be at their peak in June. I’m happy to plan a few must-see stops but also to leave room for spontaneous discoveries and local recommendations received along the way.

Update: The response so far has been wonderful — thank you for the great suggestions. I can already see this will take many visits to cover everything you’ve recommended, but I’ll carry your advice with me and try to make the most of each day. It certainly looks like I won’t be going hungry. I’m excited to report back with stories, photos, and tasting notes after the trip.
